1955 Gibson Les Paul Model Goldtop
The previous owner of this 1955 Gibson Les Paul Model received it as his inheritance from his uncle after he passed in 1989. When the photos came through, a stunning goldtop with only three strings and leaning bridge posts, the condition told the same story he did: inherited from his uncle after he passed in 1989, untouched since. When I asked about the scratched-out serial number, it was the first he'd ever heard there was one. The area where it once lived was dark and oxidized, which confirmed what I already suspected. It had been done decades ago, long before this guitar ever changed hands. He remembered his uncle as a musician, and this was the only guitar he ever saw him play.
Upon inspection in person, I found all parts, finish, and solder to be original to the guitar except for a replaced switch tip (with original toggle switch ring in place). Since the short bridge post bushings we're leaning, I tasked my luthier to replace them with post-'56 style 1" long bushings for increased stability, more precise intonation, and enhanced body resonance. It's now in spectacular playing condition and is a dream to play.
Measurements: 9.5lbs (4.30 kg) total weight. The neck measures 1.70" (43mm) wide at the nut, 0.92" deep at the first fret, and 1.01" deep at the 12th fret (medium taper profile). The neck pickup reads 7.84k ohms and the bridge pickup reads 6.76k ohms.
Dates: The serial number has been scratched out long ago, the neck angle and potentiometer codes (449, 49th week of 1954) suggest that this is an early 1955.
Originality: All parts, finish, and solder are original to this guitar except the switch tip (repro) and the bridge post bushings (1"). There are no cracks around the bushing holes.
Playability: Excellent. The neck is straight, frets have little wear, and the electronics operate as intended.
Condition: Very nice! There's typical finish checking and some edge wear around the end pin area on the back of the body.
Included: The original brown Lifton hardshell case is included.
Fine Print: All guitars ship via FedEx Priority Overnight for domestic sales or FedEx Priority International. I offer a 48 hour approval period beginning on delivery for all sales during which you are welcome to opt for a return as long as the guitar is still in as-sent condition. I do not charge a restocking fee, but any non-refunded payment processing fees, outbound shipping, and return shipping costs are subtracted from the refund in the case of a return.
