Fender Jazzmaster 1963 in Chicago, Illinois!

I'm thrilled to be the guitar buyer for this Fender Jazzmaster 1963 from its original owner in Chicago, Illinois! The Fender Jazzmaster is one of my favorite vintage guitars ever made, so I was happy to book a flight to Chicago to get it. The seller of this Fender Jazzmaster 1963 in Sunburst finish received this guitar brand new as a gift from his parents. He played his Jazzmaster in a band with his friends in high school but life soon got in the way. He stored the Jazzmaster away in its case and forgot about it until now.

How to date this Fender Jazzmaster

Some disassembly in required in order to know exactly how to date a Fender Jazzmaster since the potentiometer codes, bridge pickup cavity dates, and neck heel pencil date are all hidden. I could tell when I picked up this Fender Jazzmaster 1963 that the neck had never been off and the pickguard had never been off. I decided that I didn't want to disassemble the guitar at the seller's house so let's start with the stuff that's visible. 

The serial number on this Fender Jazzmaster 1963 is a 5 digit number starting with 95 which falls squarely in the range for 1963 (check out more here: Fender Jazzmaster serial numbers). We can also see that it has a spaghetti style headstock logo, veneer Rosewood fretboard, clay dot position markers, patent number tremolo, and an attractive bright red Sunburst finish. All of these features support the 1963 year. I'm confident that when I disassemble the guitar for cleaning and set up, I'll find late 1962 or early 1963 dates.
