The Roland Space Echo and Chorus Echo units were made from 1973 to 1990 and became an industry standard for reliable tape delay, reverb and chorus effects. The RE-201 Space Echo was the first to introduce Echo and Reverb in one unit. These units are solid, quality echo machines made to the highest standards by Roland in Japan. The revolutionary free floating tape tank design cuts down on tape wear and unwanted echo inconsistencies. The 11 position rotary switch allows for different repeat divisions that make it easier for a player to dial in the delay style. The RE-201 is a classic model that coveted by all delay lovers.
This RE-201 was made for the US market (120V) and has seen it's fair share of use. It's just returned from the tape echo experts at Orbit Electronix for a full rebuild including new tape, input jacks, felts, three prong power supply cable and motor rebuild. The repeats are reliable but still retain that classic analog warmth and tone. Tony at Orbit Electronix nailed the adjustment and setup so it's performing just like it did from the factory. It has one replaced screw on the lid and one bruise on the tolex (see pictures). I chose to leave the sticker on the front as well as the marks from the previous owner's settings.
This vintage Roland RE-201 is in great functioning condition and ready to go back in the studio. The 70s and 80s were a golden age of manufacturing for Japan while the US was struggling with new competition. The build quality of these old machines is evidence for their skill.
