Fender debuted a third professional grade solid body electric guitar in 1958: the Fender Jazzmaster. The company was eyeing the jazz guitar market share owned by rival guitar companies like Gibson and Guild but with its own take inserted into the design. The Jazzmaster's main draws were the modern style offset waist body, floating bridge and tremolo tailpiece, proprietary pickup design, and unique preset rhythm and lead circuits. The initial run of guitars in 1958 and early 1959 featured an attractive gold anodized aluminum pickguard that was replaced by tortoiseshell celluloid.

This fantastic example of the first year of the Fender Jazzmaster features a neck heel date of "11/58" indicating November of 1958. The bridge pickup cavity in the body also has an 11/58 pencil date. Just above the truss rod nut is evidence of the thick slab style Rosewood fretboard used by Fender from 1958 until 1962.

This 1958 Fender Jazzmaster was an absolute joy to play. The pickups were nicely balanced and had a wide frequency response range. With the amp set clean, both pickups had a nice complexity that was fun to explore. I didn't spend my time playing through pedals because it was fun to listen to this guitar by itself. The tremolo arm was stable and slight stiff which made the tuning remarkably stable. It was refretted by Jason Burns since the original owner had filed the frets down nearly all the way.
