1965 Gibson SG Custom Bigsby

Regular price $13,995.00

Wide neck, Bigsby B-5 tailpiece, and three unopened patent number humbucking pickups. This early 1965 Gibson SG Custom is one of only 236 of the model shipped that year and has survived in nice condition. It exhibits a small version of a neck pocket crack that's common to this model, but it has been glued and is now stronger than before. Apart from that, it's completely original and plays and operates exactly as the manufacturer intended.

Measurements: 7.8 lbs (3.4 kg) total weight. The neck measures 1.7" (1 11/16", 43mm) wide at the nut, 0.80" deep at the first fret, and 0.96" deep at the 12th fret (slim taper profile). The neck pickup reads 7.33k ohms and the bridge pickup reads 8.13k ohms. The middle pickup likely reads 7.72 k ohms (calculated from parallel output-jack readings).

Dates: The potentiometer code reads "13764xx" (137 = CTS, 64 = 1964, and XX = xxth week of the year (these digits covered by original solder).

Originality: All parts and finish appear to be original to this guitar.

Playability: Good. The SG Custom guitars in the mid 1960s came standard with Fretless Wonder style frets which are low from the factory. The frets on this guitar have little wear, but modern players would likely prefer a refret over FW frets in any condition.

Repair: The neck tenon shifted slightly on the treble side of of the neck pocket causing finish cracks and a few piece missing. The tenon was glued and clamped and is likely to be stronger than it was before.

Condition: Good. There's typical finish finish checking and some nicks/dings/scratches.

Included: The original hardshell case is included.

Fine Print: All guitars ship via FedEx Priority Overnight for domestic sales or FedEx Priority International. I offer a 48 hour approval period beginning on delivery for all sales during which you are welcome to opt for a return as long as the guitar is still in as-sent condition. I do not charge a restocking fee, but any non-refunded payment processing fees, outbound shipping, and return shipping costs are subtracted from the refund in the case of a return.
