1953 Gibson Les Paul Model Goldtop

Regular price $27,995.00

This fascinating trapeze bridge 1953 Gibson Les Paul Model in the less common all-gold finish variety has recently come from the family of the owner it spent the majority of its life with. Undoubtably an original early 1950s Gold finish, the exact reason for the "4" prefix in the serial number is unknown to me.

It's possible that the guitar went back to the factory in 1954 and left with a new finish and serial number. The "134 323" potentiometer code, low neck pitch, and trapeze bridge suggests that the guitar began life in 1953. Whatever the reason, it has survived in nice condition and is as good of a player on the original bridge and frets as I've ever played.

Measurements: 8.9 lbs / 4.05 kg total weight. The neck measures 1.70"/ 43mm wide at the nut, 0.925" deep at the 1st fret, and 1.035" deep at the 12th fret. The neck pickup reads 7.71k ohms and the bridge pickup reads 8.97k ohms.

Originality: Replaced tone potentiometers (1993 codes) and replaced reproduction Grey Tiger capacitors. All other parts appear to be original to the guitar. I believe that the finish is an early 1950s Gibson all gold finish, but the "4" serial number prefix suggests it may have gone back for a factory refinish.

Playability: Good. The frets have wear but plenty of meat if you like original small frets. The neck is straight and the electronics function as intended.

Condition: Good. There's a small crack on the neck behind the headstock which doesn't go through the wood. In fact, we were unable to flex it to get glue in, so it's possible that it doesn't go much past the thick all-gold finish. There is significant oxidation to green in the gold finish on the back of the neck. Nicks, dings, scratches, finish checking, and character abound.

Included: The original Lifton case is included. It's a 1954 era arched lid case instead of a flat lid case like a trapeze bridge guitar typically is housed in.

Fine Print: All guitars ship via FedEx Priority Overnight for domestic sales or FedEx Priority International. I offer a 48 hour approval period beginning on delivery for all sales during which you are welcome to opt for a return as long as the guitar is still in as-sent condition. I do not charge a restocking fee, but any non-refunded payment processing fees, outbound shipping, and return shipping costs are subtracted from the refund in the case of a return.
