The dot fretboard examples from 1958 until early 1962 are some of my favorite guitars to ever come out of the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, MI. The ES-335’s thinline body with solid center block can trace its origins from Les Paul’s “log” guitar in the 1940s to Ted McCarty’s design genius in the late 1950s. McCarty and company’s experiments with tone wood combinations on solid body guitars were shooting for good sustain but without the harsh brightness – the solid Maple block with hollow wings was exactly that. John kept the original receipt from that transaction that bears this serial number, at a purchase price of $250 for the guitar and case. Since a new Stratocaster cost $289.50 and a case $52.50 in 1965, we assume that the guitar was being sold used.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0230/9164/2448/products/1964_Fender_Stratocaster_1062-001.jpg?v=1560617629
1943-gibson-l-00-maple-rims
1943 Gibson L-00 Maple Rims

Gibson’s L-00 model flat-top guitar debuted in the 1932 catalog as a budget friendly workhorse guitar for only $25. The Bigsby B-5, chrome finished raised Gibson and patent number tune-o-matic bridge with nylon inserts, and copper ground wire could date from 1965 to about 1970. All signs point to a factory refinish and update except that it doesn't have a restamped serial number. In my opinion, the evidence suggests this guitar was refinished at the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, MI in the late 1960s despite the lack of restamped serial number.

Specifications: 9lbs 4oz, 1 11/16" nut width, .89" neck depth at the 1st fret, .99" depth at the 12th fret. The original owner installed a black rhythm/treble ring and crude input jack plate so I replaced them with the Historic Makeovers aged reproductions. The fret nibs are mostly gone from the fretboard of this guitar indicating a possible refret. The dimensions of the frets match what I would expect from 1955.

Important parts from 1955: both P-90 pickups and covers (two black leads from coils to baseplate), nut, tuners and bushings, amber volume and tone knobs, pickguard and mounting hardware, all electronics, brown and pink Lifton case with raised lid.
